Modern theories of organizational design emphasize fluid, contribution-focused roles over static job descriptions, hiring on competencies (skills/attitudes) rather than credentials, and performance tied to team impact and collaborative culture. Among these, self-managing or “Teal” models (Laloux, 2014) envision autonomous teams with minimal hierarchy, where each person holds evolving roles, not fixed jobs.
For example, Holacracy replaces traditional job titles with multiple dynamic roles clustered into circles; roles are continuously updated by those doing the work, enabling workers to swap in and out of tasks as needs change. Likewise, Sociocracy organizes people into nested circles (teams) that govern themselves by consent; “roles cluster tasks…defined and selected by circles to make sure operations are packaged meaningfully,” and individuals “move in and out of roles fluidly as they and the circles see fit”. In these systems jobs/positions become secondary to defined roles and capabilities – sharpening focus on what contributions people make, rather than on titles.
